The reviewer had enjoyed the first volume on the history of Ethiopian towns (JES, vol., 18, pp. 122-124), not because it was a study of Ethiopian towns as centres of commerce and craft productions but because in it he used the buildings of Gondar and Adwa as stages on which to portray the Richard Pankhurst who has lived in Ethiopia for over thirty years, is Professor at the Institute of Ethiopian Studies, Addis Ababa. His most recent books include A History of Ethiopian Towns from Dr. Pankhurst received his Ph.D. in Economic History and moved to Ethiopia in 1956 and began teaching at the University College of Addis Ababa. In 1962 Dr. Pankhurst founded the Institute of Ethiopian Studies, located on the grounds of Addis Ababa University, and was the first Director of it.
