Electro Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive 2014/30/EU replaced 2004/108/EC Directive per 20 April 2016 and it is the directive relating to the electromagnetic compatibility of electronic devices. It is the 3rd directive because on 3rd of May, 1989 the directive 2004/108/EC replaced the previous EMC directive 89/336/EEC.
The EMC Directive 2004/108/EC is one of a number of CE Marking Directives that are getting a make-over to bring them into line with EU Decision No. 768/2008/EU, in accordance with the New Legislative Framework (NLF) that was introduced in 2008.
The most recent update occurred in 2014, when the Directive was recast to align it with the New Legislative Framework (NLF). The Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU and the EMC Directive 2014/30/EU are of special significance to electrical project management specialists and to manufacturers of control panels and general electrical equipment for machines and installations. EMC Directive 2014/30/EU 1.2 Definition of terms The EMC directive was introduced in the EU in 1992 which was designed to standardize requirements across the EU member countries and free up the movement and electronic goods. So that was a quick look at the history of EMC. Now let's take a look at where it's heading. The Future of EMC Testing The Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive aims to regulate the electromagnetic emissions caused by electrical or electronic equipment in order to ensure that such products do not disturb the normal functioning of radio, telecommunication, and other electrical or electronic products, which shall still be able to operate as intended.

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing assesses the level of electromagnetic emissions generated by a device. Testing will determine a device’s potential for interfering with other devices nearby, as well as its potential to be interfered with by their electromagnetic emissions, too. EMC phenomena in order to satisfy their specific safety provisions. The EMCD is therefore not a safety related Directive. Functional safety aspects based on electromagnetic disturbances are regulated for instance by the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, the Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU and the General Product Safety Directive 2001/95/EC. The EMC Directive first limits electromagnetic emissions of equipment to ensure that, when used as intended, such equipment does not disturb radio and telecommunication as well as other equipment.
